CHAPTER 10

G ranny and I neared the entrance of the circus, walking in silence. Empty paper cups and circus flyers littered the ground and a slight breeze from the bay kicked up dust as it passed. Last night, it had been filled with music and lights and laughter and, in my personal opinion, a slight horror movie vibe, but today it was akin to a ghost town from an old western movie. I half expected two gunslingers to swagger out from opposite sides and challenge each other to a quick draw duel. But there was another feeling that suddenly took over. An eerie feeling that, in spite of not seeing a soul in site, someone was watching me. It sent a shiver down my spine.

“Are you all right?” Granny asked.

“Yeah, fine,” I said curtly.

“No, you’re not.”

I sighed. “I’m just…”

“I’m worried about you.,” she said.

“You are?”

“Of course I am.” She seemed genuinely surprised by my doubt.

“I’m fine, Granny,” I said in a quiet voice.

“You don’t have to talk to me about it. But you should talk to him.”

I knew exactly what she meant. “I will.”

“While we’re here, I’m going to go snoop around. If you see the bard and you’re alone, go the other way,” she said.

“Okay, but I’m just giving Harper his phone and then I’m out of here.”

She smirked. “Okay. We’ll see.” And she was gone.

The unsettling feeling of being watched returned and I quickened my pace, looking for a sign of life, but not finding any. The performers kept their trailers separate from the main circus grounds, behind thick layers of rope and chain to ward off guests who might try and wander away from the designated entertainment area. I guessed that Harper was amidst the trailers somewhere, probably questioning suspects and witnesses, so I made my way back. Feeling increasingly uncomfortable as I went, I decided to sneak around to the opposite side of the trailers, out of the direct view of anyone. I heard distant voices and figured I was headed in the right direction.

The first trailer I passed had its curtains drawn, but the second had its wide open. I slowed as I passed, peeking inside. It was decorated in bright, sunny colors, yellows and reds, and the walls were lined with vintage movie posters. Continuing on, I saw a weathered wooden sign adhered to the door. Curly was etched deep into the wood and a dark varnish settled into the letters. I took a few steps to my right and looked down at the rows of trailers. Each had a name on its door.

I glanced around, but I seemed to be alone. There were two clear options here: continue on, find Harper, give him his phone, and leave. Or snoop around.

The second option had far more potential to be dangerous—and possibly illegal.

But I desperately wanted to find my ring and unmask a killer in the process. Also, as previously mentioned, I’m nosy.

I crouched down and made my way forward, looking underneath the trailers to check for any feet on the other side, until I reached the one I was looking for.
